Luis Garavito is a serial killer and a rapist from Colombia. He is responsible for 138 confirmed and the rumors say he may has killed more than 300 people. His victims were poor homeless teenage boys between ages 6-16 and most of them were orphan. Garavito approached young boys on the roads and then he lured them away by offering them small gifts or jobs. He wouldn’t just kill someone. First he owned the loyalty of the teenager and when the teenager think Garavito is trustworthy Garavito asked them for a walk. On the murder day Garavito walked with the victim until they were exhausted and tired.
Then Garavito would bound to boys hands and remove clothes. Then he rape and torture the boy. Investigators found that in some cases Garavito had inserted sharp objects to the victims anus before killing. Garavito started this crime chain in 1992 and continued until he got arrested in 1998. As all the victims were poor homeless orphans no one ever noticed they were missing. But in 1998 the local police found dead bodies of two boys laying next to each other. And in the same week they found another body nearby.
So the government began a huge investigation to find out the killer. A group of police officers investigated the area where those three bodies were found and they found many other bodies buried in a mass grave. And also they found a piece of paper and address written on it. That address lead the investigators to the Garavitos girlfriends home. Garavitos girlfriend told them that she had not seen Garavito for months but she gave a bag to the investigators which was owned by Garavito. Inside that bag investigators found a journal where Garavito kept notes about his killings and the investigation continued to find more details about what is written on the journal. Investigators found a mass grave and confirmed that Garavito is responsible for at least 138 murders.
In 1999 Garavito get caught while attempting a rape. The Colombian law department sentenced Garavito a 40 years prison sentence. And as he helped police to find out the bodies his sentence was limited to 22 years. In the prison Garavito lived separately from other prisoners as the law enforcement officers suspected that he would get killed by other prisoners. Due to his good behavior in the prison Garavito is scheduled to be released in 2021.
